Spotlight on John Knight and Christine Heiser

Celebrating the work of John Knight and Christine Heiser

Christine Heiser from Birdwatchers of Hervey Bay recently finished a multi-year project of entering into Birdata the historic bird lists maintained by the late John Knight. This amounts to over 1300 surveys translated into Birdata! What dedication!

Since Birdwatchers of Hervey Bay formed in the late 1990s, John Knight had recorded all the group’s bird surveys in exercise books. Having translated and inputted over 1300 of these surveys into Birdata, not only has Christine grown a deeper understanding of the different types of surveys and how they help researchers, but she has also seen where there have been declines in bird species over time – thanks to their group having repeated surveys in the same locations over many years.

Whilst John passed in 2025 before he was able to hear that his bird legacy was fully secured in Birdatahe was thankful in knowing that his bird observations would contribute to bird conservation. Christine believes bird conservation is important not only to protect the many ecosystem services birds provide but also so that future generations can know, understand and appreciate birds. How beautiful to see an exchange of knowledge handed from one generation to another so that this knowledge can be translated and live on with purpose.  We thank both John and Christine for their wonderful contributions to Birdata and their commitment to birds.
